The Allahabad High Court has rejected the bail plea of former MP and sitting MLA from Azamgarh Rama Kant Yadav in the hooch tragedy case, where nine people died after consuming spurious liquor.

Rejecting Rama Kant's bail application, Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh observed, “The accused applicant is another bahubali, a dreaded criminal from eastern Uttar Pradesh where the bahubali and mafia culture is prevalent.

This part of Uttar Pradesh is adjacent to Bihar, and to some extent the political discourse and culture is similar to that of Bihar. Mafia dons dominate this region. These dons have amassed staggering wealth and assets from the proceeds of crime.

“They enjoy patronage and protection from the law by the ruling elite of the state. After entering the world of crime, these mafia dons and criminals exerted influence, terror, and fear over the poor, law-abiding citizens and forcibly/illegally acquired properties worth thousands of crores of rupees. They were successful in freeing themselves despite committing hundreds of heinous crimes. They are also elected and become legislators. It is an insult to Indian democratic politics.”
